This policy explains the rules governing cookies in general and on this website.
A cookie is a tracking tool consisting of a string of text containing small amounts of information that a website or social network platform sends to the browser of the user’s computer, smartphone or other device. The user’s browser saves the information received and stores it for a variable period of time (from a few hours to several months) depending on the purposes for which the cookies were created. During this period, the information is retransmitted to the website/platform server when the user’s browser accesses the same website or social network platform again.
Cookies therefore make it possible to record, for a certain period of time, information relating to the preferences of website visitors and other technical data that allows for easier navigation and greater ease of use and effectiveness of the website itself. It is thanks to cookies that a website remembers the user’s actions and preferences (such as login details, chosen language, font size, other display settings, etc.) so that they do not have to be re-entered when the user returns to the website or navigates from one page to another. In practice, cookies are used to perform computer authentication, monitor browsing sessions and store information about the activities of users who access a website. They may also contain a unique identification code that allows the user’s browsing within the website to be tracked for statistical or advertising purposes.
Some operations could not be performed on the visited site without the use of cookies. Therefore, in certain cases, cookies are necessary from a technical point of view for the site to function.
Cookies are different and are distinguished based on:
- duration (session cookies, which are automatically deleted when the browser is closed, or persistent cookies, which remain on the user’s device until a pre-set expiry date);
- the entity that installs them on the user’s terminal (cookies may be installed by the website operator or by a third party);
- purpose (technical, analytics and profiling cookies).
Cookies can be distinguished, based on their duration, between:
- session cookies, i.e. temporary cookies that remain in the cookie folder of the browser of a website visitor until the browsing session ends; they therefore expire automatically when the user closes the browser;
- persistent cookies, i.e. cookies that remain in the cookie folder of the website visitor’s browser for a longer period of time (which depends on the preset duration of each cookie);
Cookies can be distinguished, based on their ownership, between:
- first-party cookies (installed by the website being visited);
- third-party cookies (i.e. cookies installed by parties other than the operator of the website being visited). In these cases, cookies may also be read by parties other than those who manage the pages of the website visited by the visitor.
Cookies can be distinguished, based on their purpose, between:
- technical cookies: these are cookies related to activities that are strictly necessary for the proper functioning of a website or that allow for faster or easier navigation on the site and, consequently, better use of its services.
They can be divided into navigation or session cookies, which guarantee normal navigation and use of the website (allowing, for example, to make a purchase or authenticate to access restricted areas); and functionality cookies, which allow the user to navigate according to a series of selected criteria (for example, language, products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided to the user;
- non-technical cookies: these are cookies that fall into the following categories:
- profiling cookies: these cookies allow the website that installed them to monitor the visitor’s browsing during use of the website and to create visitor profiles in order to send them advertising messages, promotions and commercial offers in line with their preferences expressed during browsing;
- analytics cookies: these cookies are used for statistical analysis of website usage and to monitor its correct functioning.
Current Italian legislation stipulates that user consent is not required for the installation of technical cookies, which can therefore be installed on the user’s device without their consent, as they are essential for the functioning of the website or necessary to perform activities requested by the user.
For non-technical cookies, however, the user’s consent must be obtained in order for them to be legitimately installed on their device.
